Premier League Match Day 22 | Everton vs Arsenal

Saturday 4 February | 1230 GMT | BT Sport Live Streaming

Everton vs Arsenal Premier League Match Day 22

Sean Dyche could not have asked for a tougher start to his tenure as Everton manager than a visit from the league leaders.

While Everton currently sit 19th in the league they are without doubt the worst team in the league right now. Don’t believe me? In Southampton’s last nine league matches they have one win, against Everton. In West Ham’s last eight league games they have one win, against Everton. In Wolves’ last ten league games they have two wins, one came against Everton. In Bournemouth’s last 14 games in all competitions they have two wins, both against Everton. Teams look forward to playing Everton now, and that’s the first thing Dyche will want to change.

He will want to make them a team that nobody wants to come up against. Everton won’t accomplish that by pure talent, but they can do it with hard work, aggression, defensive organisation, and some good old-fashioned grit and determination. There’s definitely a Sean Dyche team in the rubble of the squad he’s inherited, including three players that have already worked under him at Burnley. James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, and Dwight McNeil all owe Dyche a lot as he developed them into good quality players and they will likely act as his proxies in the dressing room. Players like Amadou Onana, James Garner, and Nathan Patterson represent the future of Everton and all should fit well into what Dyche wants to build.

Arsenal come into this game off the back of wins over their two biggest rivals. First, they went to Tottenham’s shiny new stadium and came away with a 2-0 win, a scoreline that flattered Spurs. Arsenal played some scintillating football on the day, and while they were aided by Hugo Lloris for their first goal nobody could deny that they were convincing winners. They then welcomed Manchester United, the only team to beat them in the league this season, to the Emirates and eeked out a 3-2 win with a late Eddie Nketiah winner. Despite the manner of the victory, they again showed their quality and nobody could argue that they didn’t deserve their win.

The Gunners have a five-point lead at the top of the table, and a game in hand. They will head to Merseyside for Saturday’s early kick-off as strong favourites but Everton will provide a much stiffer test than they would have before the managerial change. Can Dyche spoil Mikel Arteta’s weekend? It seems unlikely but it can’t be ruled out.

Premier League Match Day 22 | Brentford vs Southampton

Brentford vs Southampton Premier League Match Day 22

On paper, this might not seem like the most glamorous of ties but it has the potential to be one of the more entertaining games of the weekend.

Thomas Frank’s Brentford play an attractive brand of football and are having an excellent second season in the Premier League. They currently sit 8th in the table. That in itself is not remarkable, but the fact that they are above both Liverpool and Chelsea is. Brentford recently tore Liverpool to shreds and left nobody in any doubt that there are serious problems with Jurgen Klopp’s team and very few with Frank’s.

Frank has total buy-in from his players, and the club as a whole seem to operate in perfect harmony. Along with Brighton, Brentford stand out as one of the league’s best-run clubs who punch above their weight time and again through smart business practices. Their recruitment and development of players are the envy of most others and with results on the pitch being so impressive you would imagine that their stay in the Premier League will be a long one.

Southampton might not be long for the Premier League this time around, but they have put in place the foundations of a young team that could bounce straight back up if they are relegated. They currently sit bottom of the table but there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about the club’s long-term future. It starts with their recruitment over the past three seasons. The summer of 2020 saw them add Salisu and Ibrahima Diallo, two young players with really high upsides. In 2021 they brought in Tino Livramento who fits the same criteria. This season they’ve gone all in on the strategy. Gavin Bazunu, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Romeo Lavia, Sekou Mara, Samuel Edozie and Juan Larios joined in the summer, while Carlos Alcaraz and Kamaldeen Sulemana were added in January.

Very quietly, Southampton have built a team that could be really special in two to three years if they can keep all their young players together. A season of getting battle-tested in the Championship might be the best thing for them, and they could sell senior players like James Ward-Prowse, Che Adams, and Kyle Walker-Peters to cover any financial shortfalls associated with relegation. Of course, nobody wants to be relegated but it wouldn’t be the worst thing to let the Saints reset themselves and clear of some unwanted contracts. Look at how Burnley have benefitted.

The mission for now though is survival. Whether Nathan Jones is the man to do that remains to be seen but things haven’t gone brilliantly under the former Luton manager. In six league games, the Saints have lost five times. That will need to change or there may well be another new manager at St. Mary’s before long.

Premier League Match Day 22 | Tottenham vs Manchester City

Sunday 22 January | 1630 GMT | Sky Sports Live Streaming

Tottenham vs Manchester City Premier League Match Day 22

Super Sunday promises to be a good one with Tottenham playing host to the defending Champions.

These sides only played each three weeks ago and the memories of that game are still fresh in the mind. Spurs took a 2-0 half-time lead at the Etihad, executing Antonio Conte’s gameplan to perfection. Unfortunately for his manager, and his teammates, Hugo Lloris has become a complete liability and was at fault for multiple goals in the second half as City came back to win 4-2.

Tottenham might sit fifth in the table but they will definitely be unhappy with how their season is going. It started very well. After 10 games they were third in the table, with seven wins and two draws giving them an impressive 23 points from a possible 30. Since then, they have only taken 13 points from a possible 33, suffering six defeats in 11 games. Antonio Conte has aired his frustrations on more than one occasion and there has been a lot of speculation that the Italian might leave Tottenham at the end of the season. Conte will miss this game having undergone recent surgery but will no doubt have left strict instructions for what he wants to see from his players.

Tottenham are only three points behind Newcastle and Manchester United but have played a game more. They can’t really afford to lose too much ground on the top four and need to be conscious of the teams behind them who could potentially overtake them. Brighton and Liverpool, for example, are five and seven points behind respectively, but both have two games in hand. If Tottenham’s poor form continues, they could find themselves facing a Europa Conference League campaign next season.

City need to win this game to keep pressure on Arsenal. As things stand they are five points behind the Gunners, having played a game more. That is a gap they can overcome. They’re proven winners who are used to winning under pressure in the Premier League. When the title race really gets going, with about 10 games to go, they just need to be within striking distance. With Arsenal playing the day before them this weekend, this could prove a chance to close the gap if the leaders drop points at Goodison Park.

Pep Guardiola has made some strange decisions this season, and the recent loaning of Joao Cancelo to Bayern Munich is the latest among them. Reports of a falling out between the two might explain why the decision was made but City must now try and retain their title and complete the three-in-a-row without a player who has been vital to their last two titles.
