We still have a title race, we have a relegation dogfight and we have a race for top four. There’s so much still to be decided between now and May 22nd with very few teams being “on the beach”, as almost everyone has something to play for.

Premier League Match Day 32 | At The Cliff Edge

Everton vs Manchester United Premier League Match Day 32

⚽ Everton vs Manchester United
📅 Saturday 9 April 2022
⏰ 1230 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming

These two teams began the season with high expectations, and both are experiencing their worst case scenario. Manchester United face the possibility of missing out not just on Champions League football for next season, but potentially on Europa League football as well. Given the amount of money they’ve spent, that would be disastrous. Everton have spent themselves to the edge of oblivion and are staring at relegation which could have a catastrophic impact on the club.

Everton’s defeat to Burnley during the week was a hammer blow for a team with a really difficult run-in and lacking anything resembling form. In their nine league games under Frank Lampard they have lost seven of them. They’ve struggled to score goals, they’ve struggled to stop goals and they can’t get any sort control in midfield. When you’re poor in all areas, and your manager is standing on the touchline looking completely lost, it’s not promising. Everton need to win this weekend, especially with Burnley and Watford having both easier run-ins and more winnable games this weekend.

Manchester United missing out on the Champions League didn’t seem likely at the start of the season when all and sundry were pronouncing them as title contenders. The arrivals of Cristiano, Rafa Varane and Jadon Sancho were supposed to elevate them to the level of Manchester City and Liverpool, instead they’ve gone backwards. None of those big money arrivals have paid off yet, and rumours around Cristiano’s future are an unwanted noise as they attempt to navigate the remainder of this season, and find a new manager for next season. Another other than a victory here, and they risk a season in the Conference League next season, or potentially no European football at all.

Premier League Match Day 32 | Spurs Must Win

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Match Day 32

⚽ Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur
📅 Saturday 9 April 2022
⏰ 1730 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Sky Sports Live Streaming

It would be easy to chalk Villa down as a team who have nothing to play for ahead of this weekends game, and Spurs will likely be hopeful that they will encounter a team already dreaming of their summer holidays. But, these Villa players may well be playing for their futures as Steven Gerrard plots big changes in the summer. This game is a must win for Spurs as they hope to secure a fourth placed finish this season and earn Champions League football for next season.

It’s been a disappointing season for Villa, who were hoping to challenge for European football this season. Dean Smith was fired after five straight defeats when it became clear he was not the man to take Villa to that level. Steven Gerrard’s time has been somewhat of a mixed bag with some impressive wins but equally as many disappointing defeats. At times, Gerrard’s tactical approach has been found lacking but in games where they’ve had plenty of time to prepare, Gerrard and his lead assistant Michael Beale have been able to scheme game-plans that can cause opponents a lot of problems. As mentioned above, a lot of these players are playing for their future and Gerrard will be expecting a big reaction after last weekends defeat against rivals Wolves.

Spurs are having the strangest season in recent memory. They started well, winning their first three games, and then they fell apart. They lost five of their next seven games, and Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked having only been appointed in the summer. The man Spurs initially wanted in the summer, Antonio Conte joined and things immediately improved. They went nine unbeaten and were in a strong position to push for top four, considering they had three games in hand at one point, but then they lost four of five – bizarrely with the one win being against Manchester City, and looked like no-hopers again. They’ve since pushed their way into the top four and Harry Kane has really found his best form. They will need Kane at his best, and if he is this weekend then Villa are in trouble.

Premier League Match Day 32 | Title On The Line

Manchester City vs Liverpool Premier League Match Day 32

⚽ Manchester City vs Liverpool
📅 Sunday 10 April 2022
⏰ 1630 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Sky Sports Live Streaming

This game has been circled on everyone’s calendar for months now, with it being marketed as a battle for the Premier League title. Only one point separates these clubs, not just this season but over the past four. They’re so evenly matched, and so far above everyone else, that this game deserves top billing. But, it may not decide the title. There are three possible outcomes to the game, and two of them will leave the title race still in the balance.

If City win the game, then it will be hard to see them losing the title from that position. A four game lead, with seven games to go, is close to unassailable when we talk about a team like City. City have been wobbling over the last couple of months and seen an eight point lead turn into a one point lead. City went through a war of attrition in midweek against Atletico Madrid and face another one next week in the second leg. That may alter how they approach this game, especially considering City and Liverpool will face off again next weekend in the FA Cup semi-final. Guardiola’s smaller squad has been mentioned frequently over the last couple of months, so how he shuffles his deck for the next three games will be very interesting.

Liverpool have less pressure on them than City this weekend, three months ago they were written off in the title race. That they have even made it close is impressive. The Reds are chasing a historic quadruple but that is going to be incredibly difficult. A Liverpool win will propel them to the top of the table, but it won’t end the title race. A two point lead with seven games to go still very much leaves the door open for City to swoop back in should Liverpool make a single error through their last seven games. Liverpool’s 3-1 victory against Benfica puts them in a very strong position in the Champions League so perhaps Klopp can be more aggressive in his team selection this weekend, knowing he can rest some players in midweek.

The final potential outcome is, of course, a draw. If that happens, then it’s still very much all to play for between now and the end of the season.
