Premier League Match Day 9 | Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur

Saturday 1 October | 1230 BST | BT Sport Live Streaming

Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Match Day 9

Arsenal vs Spurs is always a fantastic game. It’s the biggest game in London and goes well beyond matters on the pitch. Families in North London are divided between red and white. Friends will have bragging rights after the game, right up until the next time these sides play each other.

Arsenal have started the season well and currently sit top of the Premier League table. They have had the easiest start imaginable, but six wins from seven is impressive regardless of the opposition. Arsenal’s lone defeat came against one of their other great rivals Manchester United. United are the only team Arsenal have faced likely to finish in the top eight this season and they schooled the Gunners. Erik ten Hag embraced the same brand of football that Ole Gunnar Solksjaer used at Old Trafford, a low block and counter attacks, to make Arsenal look very naive. Arsenal’s possession based style has yielded great results in other games this season but that game showed the major flaws in their approach.

Those flaws will be what Antonio Conte will looking to exploit this weekend. The Italian tactician is a master of setting his team up to get the result he desires. Whereas many managers require their team to play well, to dominate the ball and to create lots of chances in order to win games, Conte doesn’t. Spurs sit third in the league, unbeaten through their seven games with five wins and two draws. They’ve taken points despite being outplayed in multiple games. That ability to pick up points when not paying well is the mark of a title winning team. Spurs might not be quite at that title winning level yet, but with Conte, Kane, Son and Romero they have the foundations.

This will be a really good test for both teams as we look to find out where they are in their builds. Both will want Champions League football next season as a minimum, last season it was Spurs who pipped the Gunners and Arteta will want to exact a bit of revenge.

Premier League Match Day 9 | Manchester City vs Manchester United

Sunday 2 October | 1400 BST | Sky Sports Live Streaming

Manchester City vs Manchester United Premier League Match Day 9
With respect to the North London Derby, the Manchester Derby is the marquee game of the weekend. Manchester City are the top team in England, having won four titles in the last five titles but they remain largely Manchester’s second club. United have history, and are the dominant team of the Premier League era. The are England’s biggest club, regardless of their lack of success on the pitch in the last decade.

City, like Spurs, are unbeaten this season. Like Spurs they have five wins and two draws this season. City haven’t fired on all cylinders often this season as they try and integrate Erling Haaland into the team. It’s been a bit awkward at times but such is the brilliance of players like Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan, and with Haaland himself being an absolute force of nature, City are still able to destroy teams in 10 to 15 minutes. City had issues playing United under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, despite the sizeable talent gap between the two. City have been better than United since Alex Ferguson retired, but derbies are always a bit different and United will always raise their game for the biggest games. They’ve already beaten Liverpool and Arsenal this season and they’d love to add City to the list.

United began the season in terrible fashion, losing at home to Brighton before getting hammered at Brentford. Out went the high line, out went high risk football and back came Ole-Ball. A deeper defensive line, quicker transitions and the dropping of the club captain and the biggest star. United have improved immensely since Maguire and Cristiano were left out of the team, winning four straight. That might cause some issues down the line, with neither player likely to be too happy with the situation. While it works, it works though. As he tries to establish himself at United, Erik ten Hag needs his team to be winning games and building confidence. It’s a long term project, and despite the big spending in the summer, United will have to walk before they run. This game will be big for them if they win, but if they lose it won’t be the end of the world.
