There are few sounds in football that make the hairs on your neck stand up quite like the bagpipes sounding and thousands of proud Scots linking arms to bellow their national anthem with a tribalistic pride that only those who have been downtrodden for centuries. It’s a song, and it’s singing creates a sound, that can only serve to inspire those about to enter the battle field.

The results from Scotland’s opening two fixtures in these European Champions do not align with the performances they have given on the pitch. Spurred on by ten thousand people making the noise of fifty thousands, the Scots went toe to toe with the Czech Republic in their opening game but came up short as a result of their own lack of quality in the final third and a striker in Patrik Schick who decided to announce himself on the world stage at their expense.

Scotland had 58% of the ball, and 19 total shots in the game but only four of them were on target. They dominated in the middle of the park with John McGinn, Scott McTominay and Stuart Armstrong possession the energy and quality to outplay their opponents while Andy Robertson showed why many rate him as the world’s best left back with his marauding runs up and down the left flank. Unfortunately, the quality that had across the middle of the pitch didn’t extend to the forward line, or indeed the defense.

Without Kieran Tierney at the back, there simply wasn’t anyone capable of dealing with Schick’s quality. A brilliant header opened the scoring before a bizarre sequence of events that began with Jack Hendry deciding to shot from 30 yards out and wasting possession after he’d done brilliant to win it back, saw the ball ricochet just inside the Scottish half where Schick ran onto it and proceeded to produce one of the greatest goals in the history of the European Championships. Spotting David Marshall well off his line, Schick generated the perfect curve and dip on his 50 yard effort to give the keeper no chance and silence a stunned Hampden Park. The 2-0 defeat did not reflect the game that took place but in the end, Schick’s individual quality was the difference. If he had been born Paddy McSchick of Perth rather than Patrik Schick of Prague, the scoreline likely would have been reversed.

Undeterred, the Scots marched south to Wembley and didn’t just match England on their home patch, they flat out outplayed them. With Tierney back, and McTominay moved back into defence to join him, Scotland looked a lot stronger at the back and that opening in midfield allowed for Billy Gilmour to come into the team. If the diminutive 20 year old had any nerves going into just his third appearance for the senior team, he certainly didn’t show them. He produced a man of the match performance, outshining not only his team-mates in the middle of the park but his much vaunted opponents, including club-mate Mason Mount.

Unfortunately for Scotland, their lack of quality told in front of goal once again. Che Adams came into the starting 11 and while he’s a quality player he is is very inexperienced at the international level. Lyndon Dykes is more experienced but lacks the quality required to play at this level. He has looked completely out of his depth through two games and though he brings a tremendous work rate and a desire for battle, Steve Clarke needs to consider leaving him out of the team and perhaps playing Stuart Armstrong in attack instead.

Scotland must beat the Croats to advance, but the same is true of the Croats. A draw serves no purpose to either side and defeat means certain exit. Win or go home. Scotland can beat Croatia, even with all their glamour names, if they repeat the level of performance they showed against the Czechs and England. With Hampden behind them, and O Flower of Scotland ringing in their ears the Tartan Army are more than capable of coming out on top through sheer force of will. They just need to find a goal or two. That’s it. That’s all that’s been lacking so far.
