We’re three quarters of the way through January, so hurray for that! Covid lockdowns rules will be loosened in February so there’s that to look forward to for anyone having a tough time under the current restrictions. That’s a few weeks away yet but at least this weekend, there’s a decent amount of sport to enjoy! Need a Live Sport Streaming VPN?
On the other side of the pond the NFL continue to do a fantastic job navigating the strange landscape that Covid in the USA has created. They’re at the big money portion of the season now, with the Conference Championship games taking place this weekend. We’ve previewed both games right here.

We always start with football, unless something else demands the attention first. This weekend the biggest event taking place anywhere is UFC 257 which sees the return of the biggest star in the history of MMA, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor who will step into the octagon to face former Interim Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier in a rematch of their 2014 meeting which McGregor won by first round KO.
McGregor’s has only fought in the UFC twice in the last four years, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018 before returning to defeat Donald Cerrone in spectacular fashion in January of 2020. McGregor has probably cost himself a substantial amount of money by fighting so infrequently in recent years but he remains the sports biggest draw, and indeed one of the biggest draws in all of combat sports. He’s rumoured to be lining up a boxing match with Manny Pacquiao for later this year and has also said he wants to fight in the UFC as often as possible over the next 18 months, whether any of that happens remains to be seen.
Poirier has been much more active than McGregor and has improved massively since that 2014 fight. He’s had eight fights in the last four years, and lost only once. To Khabib, who beats everyone. He has defeated highly ranked fighters like Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje, and last time out he outpointed Dan Hooker in a fantastic fight.

Moving on to football, the action begins tonight at 7.30pm in the Bundesliga with the Borussia vs Borussia matchup as Dortmund travel to Gladbach. Gladbach sit 7th in the table but are only one point behind Dortmund in 4th. Dortmund haven’t clicked this season and have been relying on the brilliance of Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland to win them games. Gladbach have also been a bit disappointing but their main focus was on the Champions League during the early stages of the season.
The South Coast derby is the highlight of the Ligue 1 fixtures this weekend as 6th place Marseille travel to the Principality to take on 4th place Monaco in what should be a good game. Marseille have struggled for form recently and are coming off back to back league loses while Monaco have won three on the bounce to close the gap on the top three in what is, by far, the closest Ligue 1 title race in the best part of a decade.
Table toppers AC Milan play host to Atalanta in Serie A’s game of the weekend. After a very shaky start to the season, Atalanta are unbeaten in their last five games and are only 1 point off a top 4 spot. They’ve been disappointed with their performances and results in their last two games, draws against lowly Genoa and Udinese, but they still represent a significant threat to Milan. With neighbours Inter breathing down their neck, Milan know they can’t afford any slip-ups.
In La Liga the fixtures that catches the eye is league leaders Atletico Madrid, seven points clear with a game in hand, playing host to Valencia on Sunday at 8pm. Atletico have been arguably the best team in Europe this season, with an attack that is flying and the best defense in Europe. Luis Suarez is La Liga’s joint top scorer and his partnership with Joao Felix has spearheaded Diego Simeone’s men on their march towards the title. Valencia are a train-wreck this season so this game should offer goals.

La Quinta, California is the focus of the PGA Tour this weekend with the American Express underway. Brandon Hagy leads the field after shooting an outstanding 8 under first 18 holes. He’s 1 shot clear of An Byeong-hun and at least two clear of the rest of the field. While not considered a glamour event, there is a $1.2mil cheque at stake for the winner so best believe the competition will be rife.

More and more NBA games are getting postponed but as things stand the league has no plans to pause the season, and they have games scheduled all weekend. The pick of the games on each night is as follows:
- Friday: 76ers vs Celtics, Cavaliers vs Nets, Suns vs Nuggets
- Saturday: Nets vs Heat, Mavericks vs Rockets, Jazz vs Warriors
- Sunday: Pacers vs Raptors, Bucks vs Hawks, TrailBlazers vs Knicks
And that’s that. Once again, it’s a lighter than normal schedule of sport, but there are some stand out events between the McGregor fight, the football on offer and that Munster-Leinster battle. No matter what you’re sporting preferences are, there should be something on for you this weekend.
