You would imagine that some teams can’t wait to get to the break while others are probably dreading it because they have found a rich vein of form and don’t want the disruption.

Our Premier League Match Day 14 preview is brought to you in partnership with EPL Index, and Dave Hendrick – host of the Two Footed Podcast, offering FREE podcasts to football fans.

This isn’t a particularly exciting line-up of games from a watching perspective as the powers that be have put five games on the 3pm Saturday kickoff, and of the five televised games not many seem all that enticing to be honest. So with that in mind, we’re just going two this week.

Premier League Match Day 14 | Newcastle vs Aston Villa

Newcastle vs Aston Villa Premier League Match Day 14

Eddie Howe is Newcastle manager because Unai Emery turned Newcastle down. Eddie Howe knows this and it can’t sit well with him. As he sits on the podium at press conferences, he knows that the journalists asking him questions also know it. He was, at best, Newcastle’s second choice. That has to sting and he has to be looking ahead to this weekend’s match as an opportunity to get one over on Emery, to show that he’s the better manager.

In truth, the result this weekend will tell us nothing about who the better manager is. Howe is 12 months and £220million into his work at Newcastle. He has been allowed to spend freely. Emery hasn’t even sat in his office chair yet. The Spaniard has only just been appointed and won’t even sit in the dugout this weekend as he awaits his work permit. The Spaniard has been at Villa’s training ground, though it must be stressed he was definitely not working and definitely didn’t take multiple training sessions with his new squad. None the less, this is an interesting game as it takes place between two teams that are much closer to each other in terms of talent than the current league positions would suggest.

Newcastle sit 4th, likely an unsustainable high given their lack of elite talent and squad depth. Aston Villa are 15th, and were 17th before their demolition of Brentford at the weekend. This may have been a false league position because of how poorly managed they were through the first 11 games of the season. Steven Gerrard did a terrible job in charge and was rightly dismissed after the appalling performance against Fulham a week ago. Aaron Danks, who will take charge again this weekend, was the man who made the decisions for Brentford and the difference between the performances against Fulham and Brentford was incredible. There is a notion among Gerrard’s pals in the media that the players just stopped playing for him but it was clear to all who paid attention that Villa’s players were being sent out to play without a hint of real instruction.

Howe has done almost as good a job managing Newcastle as he has deflecting attention from the human rights violations of their ownership. Toon have lost only once this season, and gained a league-most six draws. Unlike his Bournemouth teams, Howe has made his Newcastle team very hard to beat. Sven Botman has been outstanding since arriving from Lille in the summer and his partnership with Fabian Schar has been the building block for this team to build from. With Bruno Guimaraes pulling the strings in midfield and Callum Wilson at his poaching best in attack, Toon have a strong spine to their team and that is what they will rely on as they attempt to continue building under this ownership.

Premier League Match Day 14 | Manchester United vs West Ham

Manchester United vs West Ham Premier League Match Day 14

David Moyes returns to the scene of his greatest failure on Sunday hoping for better luck than he has had in previous visits to Old Trafford, and hoping that his West Ham team might finally wake up from their Premier League slumber and start stringing some good results together.

The Hammers spent big in the summer to back a manager who has overachieved in back to back seasons. It’s not just the amount the spent either, it’s who they spent the money on. Gianluca Scamacca, Lucas Paqueta and Nayef Aguerd are players of a calibre that West Ham fans would normally not have considered attainable for their club, but such is the draw of the Premier League right now that the Hammers were able to sign all three to add to Jarrod Bowen, Pablo Fornals, Kurt Zouma, Said Benrahma and Declan Rice. Being able to keep all of your best players while adding three high end talents like Scamacca, Paqueta and Aguerd is the stuff of dreams for West Ham fans.

It wasn’t just those three either. Moyes was also able to convert Alphonso Areola’s loan into a permanent deal, bringing in Flynn Downes, Thilo Kehrer and Max Cornet. This represented not only a huge financial outlay by the ownership, but an enormous talent upgrade for the manager to have at his disposal. That equates to more pressure for Moyes and he will be aware that there is more pressure, internally and from the fans, for continued progression.

Erik Ten Hag is still very new to the Manchester United job but it’s a job that comes with huge pressure from day one. Things have been a little uneven with United this season, and Ten Hag has had to deal with some significant issues. He inherited the Mason Greenwood situation and has managed it by not speaking it. Good move. He inherited the problem of Harry Maguire being the club captain, but not being suited to playing in a high line. He has handled that quite well and many people seem to have forgotten that the club captain, who remains first choice for England, can’t get in his club side.

And then there is the Cristiano problem. Cristiano is a net negative when on the pitch. He will score his goals, but contributes to nothing else and hurts United’s efforts to defend. Ten Hag has not always handled the situation well, if he had then Cristiano would likely not be at the club. That may be because the ownership are reluctant to allow the player to leave but Ten Hag has flitted between taking a hard line with the Portuguese striker, and pandering to his diva-like demands.

This weekend promises a good game between two sides with a lot of young talent. Considering it’s not the strongest weekend of games, this could be the pick of the bunch.
