Premier League Match Day 38 Preview | 2021-22 Season

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH DAY 38 PREVIEW

It’s the final weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League season and there is still a lot to be decided.  As per usual Premier League Match Day 38 will be shown by pay-TV broadcasters Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime and with match highlights available free on BBC Sport with Match of the Day.

Rather than focus on individual games, I thought it was probably best to focus on the three races that are still to be decided and have massive meaning for the futures of the clubs involved.

Premier League Match Day 38 | The Title

Man City Liverpool Premier League Match Day 38

Manchester City and Liverpool have been the two best teams in England over the past four seasons and this season has been no different.

City go into the final weekend knowing that a win will confirm their fourth Premier League title in five years, which is an outstanding achievement. Victory of Aston Villa at the Etihad will be enough for Pep Guardiola’s men but the pressure is all on City. Having once had a 14 point lead in the Premier League, they go into this weekend only one point clear at the top knowing that any sort of slip up will hand the title to Liverpool.

Liverpool have had an incredible season, and regardless of who wins the title it’s hard to make any argument against them being the best team in England this season. With both domestic cups already in the bag, and a Champions League final still to come, this Liverpool team are the only team who have ever taken hopes of a quadruple to the final day of the Premier League season. If the Premier League had script writers, then Liverpool would defeat Wolves while former Reds legend Steven Gerrard would inspire his Aston Villa team to a result, with former Liverpool star Phil Coutinho setting up a goal from another former Red in Danny Ings.

Premier League Match Day 38 | Top Four

arsenal spurs top 4 premier league match day 38

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham have been battling for top four for months now. With Manchester City and Liverpool having been long since certain of a top four finish, and Chelsea never looking like falling out of the top four despite their poor second half of the season, there has only been one spot really up for grabs for the rest. At one point Manchester United, West Ham and Wolves all looked like they might challenge but all three have fallen off.

Both Arsenal and Spurs have done their best to avoid finish fourth, with both sides finding new and exciting ways to drop points in games they should have won comfortably. Arsenal fans are currently trying to come up with excuses for Arteta’s failures after defeat at St. James’ Park gifted, barring disaster, the final Champions League spot to Spurs last Monday. Arsenal really should have had it wrapped up, given Spurs changed managers, United were a disaster and West Ham’s small squad meant that they couldn’t maintain their league form while they tried to win the Europa League.

Spurs, under Conte, look a real team finally. With Romero at the back, Bentancur in midfield and a scary front three things are starting to take shape. They head into this weekend just needing to avoid the type of calamity that has defined the club for years. Spurs simply need a draw, due to their superior goal difference, to confirm fourth. Given they travel to Norwich, who are already relegated, there will be no excuses if they fail to take at least a point. Arsenal face Everton, now safe, at home and should win comfortably. Arsenal don’t control their own destiny, all they can do is win and hope that Norwich do them a massive favour.

Premier League Match Day 38 | Relegation

Leeds Burnley Premier League Match Day 38 Relegation

With Everton having secured survival on Thursday night with their come from behind victory over Crystal Palace, it is down to Burnley and Leeds for the final spot in the relegation places. The sides are level on points but Burnley have a substantial goal difference advantage, which means that matching whatever result Leeds get this weekend will see them survive for another year in the Premier League.

Burnley have, on paper, the easier task this weekend with a home fixtures against Newcastle while Leeds travel to Brentford. Both will take on in-form teams, which is not ideal when you need a win. Brentford in particular have been vocal that they want to finish in the top half of the season. Leeds recent performances have not given the impression that they will pull off the win this weekend. They are without a win in their last five, but can take some solace in the fact that their last two league victories have both come away from home.

With the Clarets having taken a point at Villa Park in mid-week and with the home crowd at Turf Moor likely to be rapid, Burnley will feel like things have worked out in their favour. If, at the beginning of the season, Burnley had been told that they would stay up if they defeated 12th place Newcastle they would have taken it.

For Leeds to stay up, they need a win if Burnley draw or a draw if Burnley lose. If Burnley win they are safe, and Leeds will be heading back to the Championship.
