The ever reliable Bundesliga throws up a fascinating clash between two teams who suffered contrasting disappointments during the week when Borussia Monchengladbach take on table toppers RB Leipzig. Gladbach currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga, and have taken draws from games against Inter Milan and Real Madrid in the Champions League. While those are two impressive results, they will be massively disappointed not to have beaten Real having been 2-0 up with 4 minutes plus stoppage time remaining.

Leipzig are unbeaten in Bundesliga action but got walloped 5-0 by Manchester United in the Champions League. While the scoreline flattered United, the way Leipzig fell apart in the last 20 minutes will be of great concern to Julian Nagelsmann. He will demand a response from his players though it is worth mentioning that his tactical decisions contributed massively to their defeat. This match should be exciting with two high tempo, high pressing teams facing off. Leipzig will be favourites to win by Gladbach have the attackers to cause them major problems.

Second host sixth in Ligue 1 this weekend with the battle of Lille and Lyon on Sunday night. Both teams have made good starts to the season, playing attractive football and showcasing some of the best young talent in Europe. It’s a game that should bring goals, but with seven draws from their combined 16 games thus far this season, a score draw seems likely.

It’s a pretty uninspiring weekend in Serie A, truth be told, but the Derby della Lanterna between Sampdoria and Genoa should at least be a fun watch.  Genoa will be desperate for the win knowing that three points here, and a win in their game-in-hand against an awful Torino team, will see them leapfrog their closest rivals in the table.

Sampdoria are the more talented team, and have dominated the rivalry over the last seven seasons with eight wins to Genoa’s three. They will want to continue that superiority. If nothing else, this game will be visually pleasing. The two teams wear two of the best looking kits in world football, and the iconic Stadio Luigi Ferraris is a beautiful venue.

Our final stop on the football tour is of course Spain, where two teams who will be eager to get their seasons kick-started will meet at the San Mames as Athletic Bilbao, currently sitting in 16th place, welcome 13th place Sevilla to town. Outside of chaos-riddled Barcelona, these two sides have made the most disappointing starts to the season, especially in the case of Sevilla.

After winning the Europa League and finishing 4th last season, Sevilla were expected to kick-on having managed to keep the majority of their key players, and spending a surprising amount for a company who normally operate on a sell to buy basis. Bilbao finished a disappointing 11th last season, and improvement seemed to be in the offing with confident vibes coming from the club before the season began.

Bilbao boss Gaizka Garitano is most definitely on the hotseat with persistent rumours that former manager, Ernesto Valverde, could be set for a return to the Basque region. A win here would go a long way to silencing the doubters.

It’s a huge weekend in Rugby with the final round of the Six Nations playing out on Saturday. First, Wales play host to Scotland for a match with little more than pride and bragging rights at stake. These two teams are both capable of playing some highly entertaining rugby though, so it’s definitely one worth watching.

From Cardiff, we then head to Rome where England are the visitors knowing that they must win and secure a bonus point to stand a chance of winning the competition. England have been arguably the most impressive team in this year’s competition but this is their first match since early March. They were due to face the Barbarians last week, but the stupid actions of the few ruined it for the many and the game was cancelled. England should win comfortably, but Italy might start a bit quicker and could cause them some problems early on.

The final stop of the day is Paris, where France host Ireland knowing that if they win, they could still fall short of the title if they fail to beat England’s margin of victory by at least two points. Ireland will know that a win with a bonus point guarantees them the title. These two sides will have a big advantage of being the last game played, and knowing the result from Rome. Whichever team handles the pressure best will likely walk away with the trophy.

The third leg of this year’s extended Bledisloe Cup takes place in Sydney on Saturday as New Zealand, ahead by 20 points on the aggregate after two games, look to maintain their dominance over their great rivals. The Wallabies haven’t taken the trophy since 2002, and are outsiders to do so this year, but their first test performance will give them confidence on their home turf.

The Guinness Pro 14 offers us round four of the 20/21 season, with three games on Sunday and a further three on Monday. Dragons vs Munster, Connacht vs Benneton and Scarlets vs Edinburgh are Sunday’s offerings, while Monday gives us Cardiff vs Ulster, Zebre vs Ospreys and Glasgow vs Leinster. With international players away for the Six Nations fixtures, these games will offer opportunities for squad players to make a good impression and stake a claim for a starting role.

After the mega-event of last weekend, the UFC returns to more run of the mill programming with UFC Fight Night: Hall vs Silva. Long time Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, once considered the greatest fighter of all time and seen by many as unbeaten in his prime will enter the octagon for the first time in almost 18 months. Silva, now 45, has won only one of his last eight fights, a run stretching back to his surprising KO loss to Chris Weidman.

Prior to that, Silva was untouchable. An assassin who ruthlessly dispatched his opponents with laser sharps strikes, the only person that had ever come close to beating him was Chael Sonnen. Silva won his first 16 fights after entering the UFC. He was superhuman, but that all ended with a knockout shot from Weidman. A broken leg in the rematch, as well as shaken confidence, has meant that Silva has never been the same fighter since.

This fight could well be his last in the UFC as Dana White must be reluctant to continue to allow such a legendary figure to suffer the humiliation of defeat time after time. Uriah Hall is a dangerous striker, capable of knocking out just about anybody. Hall is inconsistent though, and has shown something of a tendency to freeze in big moments. He has an 8-7 record in the UFC and a career record of 15-9 and will know that this fight represents his last chance to put together a run at a title shot. He’s coming off back to back wins, so a third successive win could leave him just one short of that elusive title fight.

In Formula 1 the procession to crown Lewis Hamilton as World Champion once again continues with a third visit to Italy for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, scene of the infamous 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Hamilton holds a commanding lead over the rest of the field and racked up his record 92nd career win last time out in Portugal. With team-mate Valterri Bottas and rival Max Verstappen the only drivers within 175 points of his lead at the top of the leaderboard, Hamilton just needs to focus on matching or bettering those two the rest of the way. It’s rivalry week in the NFL with four match-ups between traditional rivals. In the NFC North the 5-1 Green Bay Packers face the 1-5 Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are undoubtedly the most disappointing team in the NFL so far this season and despite recent praise from Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, Head Coach Mike Zimmer is very much on the hot seat right now. These teams met in Week 1 in Minnesota, with the Packers winning 43-34 behind a 4 touchdown masterpiece by Rodgers. They’ll go into Sunday as heavy favourites to beat the Vikings again.

Sticking with the NFC, out West the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers will renew hostilities. The 5-1 Seahawks suffered their first defeat of the season last time out against the Arizona Cardinals but prior to that had shown some vulnerabilities, with each of their wins being by eight points or less. The 4-3 49ers have won their last two games in impressive fashion but have been ravaged by injuries this season. These two teams rarely disappoint when they face each other so hopefully they produce a quality game of football.

The Seahawks and 49ers don’t have the same hatred for each other that they once did, but in the AFC North we get a battle between two teams that, no matter the personnel involved, flat out hate each other. The 5-1 Ravens welcome the NFL’s only remaining unbeaten team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, to Baltimore in what should be the game of the weekend. Two of the very best teams, both built traditionally on incredible defense, will knock seven shades out of each other for your viewing pleasure. If there isn’t enough violence in the Saturday’s UFC to satisfy you, I can almost guarantee this one will.

And finally in the AFC East, the big bad bully is finally getting their comeuppance. The New England Patriots, winner of 17 AFC East Division titles out of the last 19, the perennial top dog, bring their 2-4 record, and three game losing streak, to Buffalo to face one of the best all-round teams in the NFL in the 5-2 Bills. In the first season of the post-Tom Brady era, the Patriots have seen a huge number of players sit out due to the risks of Covid-19, or get injured to this point in the season. The Bills won’t care. The Bills will show no mercy. The Bills will remember all the beatings they’ve taken at the hands of Bill Belichick and his team over the last 19 years and they will want revenge.
