France Seek Revenge in Scotland

This will be a grudge match for the French, who believe that Scotland robbed them of what should have been their first Six Nations title in 11 years last season. In truth, they let themselves down with their performance and winning the match wouldn’t have been enough without a heavy win that garnered a bonus point. Never let the truth get in the way of a good narrative though.

Scotland gave absolutely everything in their opening game with England and that may have had a knock on affect on their performance last weekend. While they made a great game of it, they seemed a little sluggish at times and didn’t have the same fury at the breakdown that they displayed against England. With the incredible Murrayfield crowd behind them, Flower of Scotland ringing in their ears, expect a massive reaction from the Scots. France will be walking into the lions den and should expect to be greeted with a frenzied attack from a Scotland team who are desperate for a first Six Nations Championship. The drought has to end sometime, win this weekend and it could well be this season.

The French are the favourites to win the Championship, but they’ve been in this situation before and routinely found new and exciting ways to blow it. For France to have gone this long without taking home the silverware is absolutely inexplicable. Victory over Ireland felt like a big deal for them, but maybe it’s because they made hard work out of it. They have a very challenging three game stretch coming up with Murrayfield and Cardiff in back to back games, before facing England at home. The schedule gave them Italy first, which helped them run their points differential up but it has left them with no easy game afterwards.

England Expects

England came in for major criticism after their performance against the Scots in their opening game, victory last time out against Italy made little to no difference because Italy aren’t respected and victory against them is seen as akin to getting a free toy with your Happy Meal. This game is huge for both teams.

England, more specifically England fans, view themselves as favourites to win the Six Nations every single year. It’s largely irrelevant whether they are in good form or not, their fans expect them to win every time out. It’s a high standard but given past success it’s not surprising. Having won three of the last six Championships and reestablished themselves as top dogs in the competition, England have become accustomed to once again enjoying success but after a strange 2021 campaign, it was expected that they would run over most of the field this time around. Scotland put a stop to such notions, and England must overcome the Welsh test because with Ireland up next, followed by France, a defeat this weekend could lead to a catastrophic campaign.

The defending Champions got their backsides paddled in Dublin, but returned to winning ways last time out defeating Scotland in a tense affair that was settled by Dan Biggar’s dropgoal. Biggar was in excellent form with the boot against the Scots and will need to be again this weekend in what will be a big test for the Welsh. If they are serious about retaining their title, they can’t afford another defeat so victory at Twickenham is a must. They have back to back home games against France and Italy to come so victory here will put them in a good position to go back-to-back and repeat the success of 2012 and 2013.

Expect Ireland Bounce-Back

Ireland won’t have been happy with how things played out in Paris last time. They can argue that they matched France in all areas but their lack of discipline at the breakdown cost them. Of France’s 30 points, 18 of them came from penalties. That’s not something Andy Farrell will want to see repeated.

Ireland are still in a strong position to claim the Six Nations title this year but they are now left relying on others to do what they couldn’t and defeat the French. They will take plenty of positives away from that defeat though, the fact that they started both halves quickly and outscored the French by three tries to two. This weekend’s game with Italy is crucial to Ireland because they need to improve their point differential. It currently sits at +16, while France have +33 and England +30. The difference being that both of those teams have already played the Italians. If Ireland can put a hefty beating on Italy they will position themselves to win the competition should France slip up.

Italy have only beaten Ireland four times from 33 meetings, with the last of those victories coming in 2013. That remains the only time the Italians have been victorious in a Six Nations match with the Irish. Their three other victories came in the 90s, when they defeated Ireland in three straight friendly tests. Their one and only victory on Irish soil came in January of 1997 when Gli Azzurri ran out 37-29 victors. 15 subsequent visits to the Emerald Isle have ended in defeat and truth be told, that is unlikely to end this weekend. Having given a good account of themselves in their game against France, Italy let themselves down as they were easily beaten by England. An improved performance will be demanded this weekend.
