SIX NATIONS 2022 ROUND 5 PREVIEW

It’s the final weekend of the 2022 Six Nations Championship, and it’s very finely balanced. France will win the title if they win their last game, if they don’t then the door opens for Ireland to claim the title. The ever popular Rugby Union Tournament will once again be shown with comprehensive free live streaming on BBC Sport and ITV.

Nobody else can win the title, and with Italy already having confirmed their place at the bottom of the table that leaves England, Scotland and Wales just jockeying for position in the middle of the table.

Wales will want to savour their last hours as Six Nations Champions and they will be hoping to bring this disappointing campaign to an end with a comprehensive victory in front of their own fans in Cardiff. The Welsh weren’t favoured to retain their crown this season but they had been expected to put up a bit more fight than they have shown. Last weekend they threw away a great opportunity to beat the French. While many came away lauding the French defence, the Welsh defence was just as impressive. France simply took advantage of their opportunities, while the Wales did not.

Italy will take home the wooden spoon for the 18th time in 23 seasons. It’s an impressive run of failure. This is the seventh season in a row that they have finished bottom of the pile, extending their own record for ineptitude. Something needs to change in Italian Rugby. From the top down. It’s not on the players, it’s on the Italian Rugby Federation. Marzio Innocenti became President of the organisation this time last year, replacing the genuinely dreadful Alfredo Gavazzi who’s nine year tenure was an abject failure. For Italy to progress as a Rugby nation they simply have to invest more in the grass roots level of the game, the infrastructure of the sport and the development pathways to the professional game. If they don’t, it might be time for them to consider stepping out of the Six Nations.

Final Chance For Ireland

Ireland vs Scotland Six Nations 2022 Round 5

🏉 Ireland vs Scotland
📅 Saturday 19 March 2022
⏰ 1645 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Free Live Streaming

Ireland come into this game as heavy favourites to win. With three wins from their first four games, they have positioned themselves to take advantage of a potential French slip-up on Saturday. The Irish have been impressive in the competition so far. They have the best points differential by a substantial mark, as a result of scoring the most points in the competition while also conceding the least. Ireland have put forward a good account of themselves at both ends of the pitch and unlike some other teams, not been heavily reliant on penalties to win games. They have scored the most tries, by a distance, and conceded the least. If not for that poor first half in Paris this game would be a coronation ceremony.

Scotland will arrive in Dublin hoping to spoil Ireland’s day and regain some pride after a pretty poor display in Rome last time out. The defeated the Italians but were on the ropes late on and did not come out of the game covered in glory. Because of the inconsistent nature of the Scottish team it’s hard to know what to expect from them this weekend. They will certainly come to compete but will we see the same sort of fury that defeated the English, or the same time of meek performance they put up against the French? Ireland will be hoping for the latter.

Ireland have a chance. It’s a small chance, but a chance none the less. A chance to end the 2022 Six Nations as Champions, Champions of the competition for the 15th time. It’s not in their own hands, they will be relying on the result in Paris to go there way but they can hope. The must also do their part and defeat the Scots.

We all remember last season don’t we? When France played Scotland at Paris in the last game of the competition, a rescheduled game that had been delayed because of the pandemic, and had a chance to claim the title with a win and a bonus point if they managed four tries. Scotland had nothing to play for, and hadn’t had a particularly good season bar their annual victory over the English. We remember that? We remember how it ended?

Well allow me to drop all pretences of impartiality. Here’s hoping that it happens again. Here’s hoping that England, with nothing to play for, can go to Paris, beat the French and hand the title to Ireland!!
